Programmed actions and project phases:

A1 – Carry out a conference press to spread the project. In Azores, Madeira and Canary;

A2 – Field work for photo-identification and collect skin samples for genetic studies. In Azores, Madeira and Canary;

A3 – Carry out a Workshop to compare scientific information – data basis about the cetaceans of the three archipelagos and the photo-identification data (images). Select telemetry techniques and equipment. In Canary;

A4 – Partners meeting for the project administrative/financing control – it may be accomplished with A3. In Canary;

A5 – Perform a comparative analysis of the existent data (mainly photo-identification images of the target species) of the three archipelagos. In Azores, Madeira and Canary;

A6 – Workshop to define a common methodological protocol for photo-identification, genetic studies and telemetry techniques. In Azores;

A7 – Partners meeting for the project administrative/financing control – it may be accomplished with A6; and discuss and define the items to establish a Macaronesian Network for the Study and Conservation of the cetaceans. In Azores;

A8 – Develop a web site to divulgate the project, with restricted areas for partners, permitting change data and information and facilitating cooperation work (specially administrative and financing). Tasks divide up between the three partners;

A9 – Fieldwork using VHF/TDR transmitters on the target species to study their movements and use of the habitat. In Azores, Madeira and Canary;

A10 – Carry out an experimental campaign to follow sperm whales (about 5 days at sea), with scientific researchers from the three archipelagos, to study their movements and use of the habitat. In Madeira;

A11 – Analysis of the results obtained during the project: photo-identification, telemetry (VHF) and TDR’s. In Azores, Madeira and Canary;

A12 – Analysis of the skin samples collected in the three archipelagos (for genetic studies). In Azores, Madeira and Canary;

A13 – Final Workshop to analyze and discuss the results obtained during the project. In Madeira;

A14 – Carry out a conference press to spread the project results. In Azores, Madeira and Canary;
